Kamp C reaches 3,000 visitors mark for The Exploded View Beyond Building at successful closing conference

For seven months, the general public could come and discover The Exploded View Beyond Building. The travelling exhibition, in the form of a life-size house and devised by Biobased Creations, shows how many possibilities sustainable building applications already offer. Indeed, the house was built out of more than 100 bio-based and circular building materials, all equally imaginative. Walls made of mycelium or a kitchen worktop made of cranberries: you name it. Yet more than a third of the materials on show are already available on the market today and another third are in the final stages of development.

"Over the past few months, we were able to welcome more than 3,000 visitors during more than 110 tours and events for The Exploded View Beyond Building," explains Alexander van Haesbroeck, manager of Kamp C. "The success demonstrates the importance of sustainable building applications to a wide audience. The events for architects and building professionals showed that sustainability and design go hand in hand. In turn, farmers discovered how they are pivotal in the transition to more sustainable construction. Today, therefore, we pull the door shut on The Exploded View Beyond Building with satisfaction."

Sarah Verbeeck, project manager at Kamp C, also looks back with joy: "It is striking how much national and international interest there is in this theme. At the beginning of the summer, delegations from Japan and Rwanda visited The Exploded View. As part of the Climate Tech Forum, we were also able to welcome a delegation from the Dutch embassy this summer. We are proud that together with our partners we can help put bio-based building on the map."

Future

To successfully close the doors of the house, Kamp C brought together partners, construction professionals, farmers and local governments at a festive closing event. Several keynote presentations by leading speakers in the profession inspired attendees. For example, Lucas De Man, one of the creative brains behind the exhibition, told us, "The innovation in bio-based materials is not finished yet. The chain development we have seen around The Exploded View Beyond Building is a reason to keep going."

The day's six content sessions shone a light on circularity and valuable chain development, themes that are important to accelerate the bio-based building movement. For example, the new Eyes Hearts Hands Urban Revolution project was presented by the municipality of Zoersel. The European project aims to achieve an inclusive transformation of urban landscapes. Zoersel is one of seven demo projects. They are working with Kamp C and energy cooperative Zonnewind to design a new circular and participatory library branch. The project serves to encourage other local authorities to make their patrimony more sustainable. Furthermore, during the congress, Kamp C could count on the expertise and knowledge of Eurabo, Flanders Circular, ILVO, POM Antwerp and the Innovation Support Centre for Agriculture and Rural Areas, among others, to connect all sectors. A final tour of the house served as a finale.

Thanks to the bio-based house's circular construction method, it will soon find a place elsewhere to inspire more people. Kamp C is also continuing to forge ahead towards a bio-based and circular construction world. In the coming years, we will work on an innovation centre with demonstrations and innovative projects. During the congress, therefore, together with RURANT, the starting signal was given for a new chain cooperation that builds further on The Exploded View Beyond Building. Together, they will identify the bottlenecks of bio-based building, encourage collaborations between construction and agriculture and build a sustainable value chain.
