Sustainable summer comfort

The Innovation Centre for Biobased Building at Kamp C is one of the demo buildings within the Sustainable Summer Comfort project. This building is undergoing an ambitious renovation with the aim of demonstrating how existing buildings can also be adapted in a future-oriented and climate-friendly way.

Within the project, Kamp C will focus on technical interventions that increase summer comfort in a sustainable way:

  • Automation of hybrid ventilation
  • Automated shading to regulate heat gains
  • Integration of a Borehole Energy Storage (BEO) field linked to the existing delivery system for sustainable cooling

The Sustainable Summer Comfort project aims to demonstrate that overheating in buildings can be avoided with less primary energy consumption than conventional active cooling systems. By focusing on appropriate construction techniques and the use of renewable sources for cooling, energy-efficient systems can not only provide an effective answer to the risk of overheating, but also be cost-efficient and guarantee a similar or even better comfort level. This integrated approach is at the heart of the project.

During the project, we demonstrate and analyse a wide range of energy-efficient and renewable cooling strategies in 11 example buildings, including 3 renovations.

  • Set up and carry out demonstrations in renovations of different building typologies in Flanders and the Netherlands. Information from other example buildings, together with data from these projects, provide insight into the properties, conditions of use, energy performance, costs and comfort level of different systems.
  • Inform building owners, users, companies and authorities about renewable and energy-efficient systems with an impact on cooling comfort and let them experience this.
  • Encourage and support building owners, policy makers and companies in the building sector in the choice of conversion to or implementation of a renewable and energy-efficient building cooling system.
  • Develop materials to provide and encourage companies and students with the knowledge to deploy the concrete application of renewable and energy-efficient techniques.

Interreg Flanders-Netherlands

The Sustainable Summer Comfort project is being implemented within the Flanders-Netherlands Interreg programme, a cross-border cooperation initiative between Flanders and the Netherlands funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The programme aims to strengthen cooperation between the two regions and address common challenges. Funding for this project is up to €318,103.28. In addition, project partners pay an own contribution.
