Cellular glass FOAMGLAS
Cellular glass insulation was chosen for the roof terrace of the circular office building 't Centrum in Westerlo (Belgium). The office is built in such a way that it can be dismantled and rebuilt with the existing materials. The choice for cellular glass insulation of the material produced by FOAMGLAS® was made because of pressure resistance, to cope with the weight of the terrace cladding. Below we highlight the four reasons why cellular glass qualifies as a choice for a circular roof.

Lifespan
The goal of the sustainable circular office 't Centrum, is to be an office that stands the test of time. It is being built on the site of Kamp C, the provincial Centre for Sustainability and Innovation in Construction, whose mission is to accelerate the transition to a sustainable society, with sustainability and innovation as guiding principles.
Because of the way 't Centre is being built, it will effectively become a huge warehouse of materials. In due course, it can be demolished and rebuilt to meet new expectations for office space.
To stand the test of time, the building's roof terrace needs insulation that can be reused several times without losing its properties.
Insulation made of cellular glass is a possible solution for this. In the EPD*, the stated reference life of FOAMGLAS® cellular glass insulation material is 100 years.
Recyclability
Cellular glass insulation for flat roofs is usually glued in place. In this case, gluing was not an option as the roof had to be easily dismantled and reusable.
The manufacturer developed an innovative solution where cellular glass insulation is not glued but laid loose on a vapour barrier and then coated with a non-combustible coating. 't Centre is a pilot project and a chance to test the solution and see it in action.
When the installation is carried out without glue, cellular glass insulation boards can be easily removed and reused.
Recycled raw material
All materials used in the construction of the innovative circular office building were carefully and deliberately chosen. An advantage of insulation with cellular glass is that most of the raw material is recycled; from car windows and waste from cuts at the manufacturer's own factory.
Combination of features
With the combination of sustainability and the product characteristics of cellular glass, a high degree of circularity is achieved.
Fire safety is a given, as cellular glass is non-combustible. Cellular glass insulation is also 100% waterproof and 100% vapour-tight. It has high compressive strength and is dimensionally stable.
