CHARM
The construction sector uses more than 60% of raw materials in Europe. Nearly a third of all waste also comes from the construction sector. So it is time to use raw materials more efficiently in this sector too!
The aim of CHARM is to reduce waste in renovation and new construction of social housing. Using circular tendering procedures, social housing companies will focus on recycling and upcycling. To put it nicely, they no longer see streams of used materials from renovation as waste, but rather as new raw materials. Several partners in the project will also carry out physical demonstration projects to test and improve the procedures. To reuse used materials, local exchange platforms will be set up, both in digital and physical form.
Within this project, Kamp C supports the social housing company Zonnige Kempen in the tendering and realisation of their circular demonstration projects.
One of Zonnige Kempen's demonstration projects is their office building in Westerlo with three rental flats that was recently completely renovated using circular materials. For this, they collaborated with Rotor.
You can read more about this project in this interview with Anneleen Eelen, director of Zonnige Kempen.
We also bring our knowledge of circular construction to the project and translate it to use in social housing and renovation. We share the knowledge domestically and organise training sessions so that other actors can get started with circular procurement.
For example, Kamp C already organised a successful CHARM inspiration day in February 2020 with more than 40 invited guests. During this day, the circularly converted office and flats of Zonnige Kempen were also visited. You can read the report of this fascinating day here. The interesting presentations given that day by speakers from all over Europe can be found here.
All buildings to be built on the Kamp C site in the future must also comply with circular principles and will be built through circular tenders.
The project runs from 25 October 2018 to 24 October 2022 and has been extended until 24/07/2023.
