From waste to concrete

URBCON aims to contribute to reducing the high primary material consumption and CO2 emissions of the construction sector. The project has a focus on concrete, as it is the most widely used construction material. The overall goal is to use by-product/waste products as an alternative to primary raw materials. In the NWE region, circular economy is already booming, especially in terms of recycling, but the high-quality use of these products is still rare.

Through the regional approach, URBCON wants to ensure the achievement of critical mass, especially in terms of policy and the better availability of by-products. The project will use four techniques to make concrete with by-products. The project will run for four years.

The province of Antwerp wants to be climate neutral by 2020. To minimise its greenhouse gas emissions, it is important to aim for energy-efficient constructions in new buildings and renovations. Camp C has already incorporated this task into its daily operations and wants to expand on it. By participating in the Interreg URBCON project, partnerships can be formed for this purpose and additional resources can be found.

The province of Antwerp lies within the programme area of the European Interreg programme North-West Europe. The project has a total budget of €5.15 million, 60% of which is subsidised by Europe, or €3.09 million. The province of Antwerp is contributing €58,187.20. URBCON is led by City of Ghent and runs from 25 October 2018 to 24 October 2023.

More information about the project can be found on the project website.

Review the webinar 'What is circular concrete and how do you apply it?'

During the webinar, the project partners will give you more insight into the project and the sustainable URBCON concrete. Using the case of 't Centrum, Belgium's first circular office building, the application of circular concrete in a circular building and circular procurement are explained. The webinar is in English.
